The political temperature in Bomet County has hit boiling point following a fierce declaration by outgoing Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok, who has forcefully dismissed widespread speculation that he is backing out of the highly contested 2026/2027 senatorial race.
Whispers had been spreading across the county that Barchok would quietly abandon his ambitions following the explosive entry of Chepkirui Kones, daughter of the late legendary Rift Valley kingmaker Kipkalya Kones.
But over the weekend, a defiant Barchok dug in his heels, declaring he is “firmly in the race to the very end,” setting up what political analysts predict will be the most expensive and cutthroat battle in the region’s history.
The battle for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket has officially turned into a playground for political heavyweights armed with deep pockets, institutional power, and ancestral legacies, leaving Bomet electorates thoroughly spoiled for choice.

The Rumor Mill and Barchok’s Defiance
Speculation regarding Barchok’s exit reached a crescendo when Chepkirui Kones officially transferred her voter registration to Bomet Municipal Hall.
Because she is married to powerful neighboring Belgut MP Nelson Koech, many assumed her entry would force a alignment of interests that might push Barchok out.
Barchok quickly dismantled that narrative:
”I have been working with the people. We understand their issues, and we are waiting for the appropriate time to fully launch the campaign,” Barchok said, countering his critics.
“It is a given that when the time comes, I will be in the senatorial race because I have the experience and the ability to fight for the interests of devolution.”
Barchok has already pulled off a strategic masterstroke by solidifying a pact with his former bitter rival Isaac Ruto.
The two political titans are planning to pool their massive regional grassroots networks—with Ruto aiming to recapture the governorship and Barchok gunning for the Senate.

The Ground War: Oversight vs. Dynasty
Incumbent Senator Wakili Hillary Sigei is not taking the challenge lying down.
Sigei has been a relentless critic of the Barchok administration, using his position in the Senate to grill the county executive over audit queries, stalled hospital projects, and financial management.
Sigei plans to frame the election as a choice between an active watchdog and an executive seeking a safe political landing. Concurrently, Sigei has heavily deployed resources toward youth and women’s socio-economic empowerment projects across the five constituencies.
On the other hand, Chepkirui Kones has brought a completely fresh dynamic into the race.
Armed with a Master’s degree from a UK university and a legendary family name that still commands fanatical loyalty in Bomet, she has launched an aggressive campaign targeting generational change.
”Bomet County needs an aggressive senator who can play the role of representation, oversight, and legislation efficiently. Those contesting against me should be ready for a tough fight,” Kones recently warned her rivals, effectively serving notice to the old guard.
With regional balance across the five sub-counties playing a major role, and all candidates desperately angling for the coveted UDA ticket, money alone will not secure this seat.
