Bomet County is set to get two major health facilities after the national government approved the construction of a Mother and Child Level 4 Hospital and a Level 5 County Referral Hospital.
The projects follow a proposal submitted on March 4, 2026, and subsequent consultations between the county leadership and President William Ruto.Announcing the development, the county leadership said the approval would mark a major step in transforming healthcare services in the region.
“Following our proposal of 4th March 2026 and fruitful consultations with His Excellency the President, I am proud to announce that the National Government has given the green light for the construction of two major health facilities in our County,” Bomet governor Barchok said.
Inside the referral hospital
The planned Level 5 County Referral Hospital will include an oncology centre and an oxygen plant, alongside other specialised facilities.
The facility is expected to strengthen cancer treatment, emergency services and specialised healthcare while reducing the need for residents to seek treatment outside the county.
“Bomet will now host a Mother and Child Level 4 Hospital and a Level 5 County Referral Hospital that will host, among other facilities, an oncology center and an oxygen plant,” Barchok said.
The county leadership described the projects as a major boost to healthcare delivery, particularly for mothers, children and patients requiring specialised treatment.
“This is a game-changer for maternal health, cancer care, emergency services, and specialized treatment in our region,” the statement added.
The county has also moved to formalise its partnership with the national government through the signing of two Intergovernmental Participation Agreements (IPAs).
“Today, to firm up the process as required by law, I signed two Intergovernmental Participation Agreements (IPAs), formal instruments that seal our partnership with the National Government and clear the path for construction to commence,” the statement said.
The county government said it had already fulfilled its obligations ahead of the construction phase by identifying and securing land for the facilities.
“For our part, the County has met its obligations: land has been identified and secured, and we are fully committed to operationalizing these facilities upon completion,” the statement said.
The county leadership further thanked President Ruto for supporting the projects and expressed optimism that construction would begin soon.
“We are deeply grateful to H.E. the President for his trust and support,” the statement said.
President Ruto is expected to visit Bomet early next month, with the county hoping he will officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for the projects.
“We eagerly await his visit to Bomet early next month, where we hope he will officiate the ground-breaking ceremony and witness the enhancement of our health system,” the statement added.
The two facilities are expected to expand access to specialised healthcare in Bomet and strengthen the county’s capacity to handle complex medical cases locally.
