The construction of the Mbita-Sindo-Kiabuya-Sori road in Homa Bay County has reached 45 per cent completion, with 24 kilometres of the road already tarmacked.
The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) said the ongoing project is expected to improve transport and connectivity across the Suba South area once completed.
“Leo niko ground kwa hii project ya Mbita–Sindo–Kiabuya hadi Sori. So far, tumeweka 24KM za tarmac, na overall progress iko 45%,” KeRRA said in an update.
The authority said the project has also created employment opportunities for young people in the area, with residents securing jobs during the construction works.
KeRRA added that its engineers remain on the ground to monitor the works and ensure the road meets the required construction standards.

Boost for fishing industry
The road is expected to have a major impact on the fishing economy around Lake Victoria, particularly in Suba South.
According to KeRRA, improved road connectivity will make it easier for residents to access fishing grounds and transport fish from landing sites to markets.
The authority said the improved road network will help fishermen and traders move fish more quickly while reducing transportation costs.
The project is therefore expected to improve access to markets, support local businesses and strengthen economic activity in communities along the route.

Once completed, the Mbita-Sindo-Kiabuya-Sori road will provide a more reliable transport link for residents and businesses in the region, while opening up easier access to key areas around Lake Victoria.
KeRRA said the works are part of efforts to improve rural road infrastructure and enhance connectivity across the country.
“Once complete, barabara hii itarahisisha access kuelekea Lake Victoria upande wa Suba South na wananchi wataweza kufika fishing grounds kwa urahisi na kusafirisha samaki hadi masokoni kwa haraka na kwa gharama nafuu,” Kerra stated.
