Chesoen, Bomet Jan 28 - Residents of Bomet Central are living in fear after a notorious burglar escaped from police custody at Chesoen Police Station. The suspect, who was detained for multiple break-ins and muggings, managed to cut through the station’s iron-sheet roof and flee while still handcuffed.

According to officers at the station, the escape happened despite the suspect being securely locked up. A two-day manhunt by police from both Chesoen and Silibwet stations has so far been unsuccessful, with authorities only recovering the handcuffs the suspect wore during his daring escape.

The incident has alarmed the community, with residents demanding swift action to recapture the fugitive and ensure their safety.

“He is known for breaking into homes and mugging people. We’re not safe until he is arrested and detained again,” said Johnstone Too, a concerned resident.

Too expressed particular concern for schoolchildren, noting that the suspect has been seen roaming the village in the early mornings.

“Our greatest fear is for the safety of children going to school. Parents have had to start escorting their kids to ensure they’re not harmed,” he added.

Regina Lelmet, another resident, fears she could be targeted for retaliation after reporting the suspect to the police.

“I filed a complaint against him when he broke into my house and stole from me. Now that he’s free, I feel like my life is in danger. He could attack me,” she said.

The escape has also drawn criticism of the local police force, with residents accusing officers of negligence.

“Our officers are clearly failing in their duties. How does a suspect escape under their watch? And why was he still in custody four days after his arrest without being taken to court?” questioned Richard Tonui, another resident.

Tonui called for immediate action against the officers involved, including transferring those who have overstayed at the station.

“Some officers have been here for too long and are no longer focused on their work. They’ve even started businesses in the area, which is a sign they’re neglecting their responsibilities,” he said.

Residents are now urging authorities to prioritize their safety by apprehending the suspect and improving the standards of local policing.
