Bomet University College is set to attain full university status after a confirmed awarding of a charter on February 6, 2026, marking a major milestone in the institution’s growth and in the socio-economic development of Bomet County.
The milestone follows a final assessment conducted in early January 2026 by the Chair of the Kenya Education Commission, which confirmed that the institution has met all the required academic, infrastructural, and governance standards necessary for the award of a charter.
News of the impending charter has been met with widespread jubilation among students, staff, and the wider Bomet University College (BUC) fraternity, who described the development as long overdue and transformative.
Since its inception, Bomet University College has witnessed significant growth, including expansion of academic programmes, improved infrastructure, increased student enrollment, and stronger community engagement. The charter is expected to accelerate this progress even further.
Speaking during a Sunday service at the Christian Union (CU), the university patron Dr Melly expressed deep gratitude, describing the charter as an answered prayer after years of anticipation.
“This is something we have prayed for and waited for patiently. Receiving the charter is a testimony of perseverance and faith,” the patron said.
Students also expressed excitement and pride, noting that the new status would enhance the value of their degrees and attract more opportunities.
“We are happy to finally become a chartered university. This puts us on the national map,” said one student leader.
The issuance of the charter is expected to coincide with the President’s visit to Bomet County, during which several key development projects will be launched. These include affordable housing initiatives, road infrastructure projects, and the official conferment of the university charter.
The award of a charter will grant Bomet University full autonomy, enabling it to:
Introduce new academic programmes, including postgraduate courses
Receive increased government funding and research grants
Attract and retain highly qualified academic staff
Enhance its national and international reputation
Beyond the university, the charter is expected to spur economic growth in the surrounding community, creating jobs, boosting local businesses, improving infrastructure, and positioning Bomet as a regional hub for higher education.
As February 6 approaches, anticipation continues to build, with many viewing the charter as not just a university achievement, but a victory for the entire Bomet County.
