The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a formal investigation following the fatal shooting of a local resident, George Gathu Matheri, by police officers in Karatina Town on Sunday night.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 11:00 PM on January 18, 2026, has sparked significant unrest in Nyeri County.
According to IPOA Chairman Issack Hassan, Mr. Matheri was shot following what was described as a "brief confrontation" with officers who were on patrol in the area.
“IPOA has already dispatched a Rapid Response Team from the Nyeri Regional Office to commence investigations and gather all relevant information to establish the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident,” the statement read.
IPOA said news of Mr. Matheri’s death triggered immediate outrage among Karatina residents.

On Monday morning, protesters barricaded the busy Nairobi–Karatina highway, effectively paralyzing the flow of traffic.
IPOA forensic experts have already processed the scene of the shooting, seizing evidence for ballistic and forensic analysis. The Authority has issued a call to action for any witnesses to step forward.
“The Authority calls for anyone who may have witnessed the incident from the area to come forward with information that may assist in the ongoing investigation,” Hassan added, while offering condolences to the family of the deceased.
POA has assured the public of its commitment to a fair and impartial investigation to ensure justice for Mr. Matheri’s family.
