President William Ruto has today, January 23, 2026 appointed Mama Ida Odinga as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The announcement was made via a state dispatch from the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, marking a major milestone in the country's diplomatic leadership.
“HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT has, in exercise of the prerogative vested in the Head of State and Government, caused the nomination of CANON DR. IDA BETTY ODINGA, E.G.H., for appointment as Ambassador/Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),” Felix Koskei said on the appointment notice dated January 23.
A Legacy of Service
Mama Ida Odinga, a career educator and long-standing advocate for social justice and women’s empowerment, steps into this global role at a critical time for environmental policy.
Observers note that her appointment signals a "Government of National Unity" approach, bridging political divides following the passing of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in October 2025.
“CANON DR. IDA ODINGA, E.G.H., is a distinguished educationist, civic leader, and an acclaimed advocate for social justice and gender equity. She began her professional journey as a graduate teacher at Highway Secondary School in Nairobi, and later at Kenya High School, where over a decade in the classroom nurtured a deep-rooted and enduring commitment to education, inspiring and guiding successive generations of future leaders,” Felix Koskei stated.
