Bomet Fish Farmers Gear Up for Expansion Under FLLoCA Program

Registered fish farmer groups in Bomet County have received training to prepare them for introduction of fish farming activities under the Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program which aims at boost fish production, improve livelihoods and enhance food security while promoting climate-resilient practices.

The training sessions, organized by the Department of Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change focus on modern fish farming techniques, pond management and sustainable aquaculture practices as well as the importance of water quality management and responsible use of resources to minimize environmental impact.

Through FLLoCA, each group will get a 300M² pond stocked with 1,000 Tilapia fingerlings. Other scope of works includes installation of a pond liner, secure fencing, and predator control measures as well as a season supply of 200kg of fish feed.

The FLLoCA program, provides financial and technical support to local communities to implement climate-smart projects. In Bomet County, the program has identified fish farming across the 25 wards as a key area for investment due to its potential to contribute to both economic development and climate change adaptation.

The training sessions have been well-received by local fish farmers, who expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to diversify agricultural activities and improve their livelihoods.

The County Government of Bomet is committed to supporting fish farmers in the region and ensuring the success of the FLLoCA program as the initiative is expected to significantly boost fish production in the county, create employment opportunities, and improve the livelihoods of local communities.
