Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to officers engaging in corruption, particularly within the National Police Service (NPS).

Speaking during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Bomet County on Thursday, Murkomen singled out officers in the traffic department and other units, vowing to take action against those tarnishing the image of the police service.

His remarks come in the wake of a report by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) which ranked the police as the most corrupt institution in the country.

Murkomen dismissed the notion that poor working conditions or low salaries justify corrupt practices.

“Those who applied for this job were aware of the hardships it entails, including deployment to tough operational areas. That does not give them a licence to take bribes,” said the CS.

He added that corruption is a matter of individual character and should not be attributed to systemic issues alone.

“Low pay is not an excuse to engage in corruption. It is the personal decision of a dishonest officer, and we will not allow a few individuals to damage the reputation of the entire service,” he stated.

Addressing concerns over recent cases of abductions and missing persons, Murkomen said investigations are ongoing and the government is committed to uncovering the truth.

“We are still establishing the facts. Investigations will determine whether these individuals were abducted or staged their own disappearances,” he said.

“Regarding reported missing persons, inquiry files are open and active. Once investigations are complete, the appropriate action will be taken.”
