The Ministry of Health has threatened to remove 697 medical interns assigned to Kiambu County if the county government doesn't end the ongoing doctors' strike, which has been crippling health services for more than 100 days.
The Ministry of Health wrote to Governor Kimani Wamatangi, urging them to take urgent steps to resolve the ongoing industrial action to avoid losing these critical healthcare workers whose services remain vital to the people of Kiambu County.
The interns, including medical officers, pharmacists, dentists, nurses, and clinical officers, were deployed to Kiambu County on July 1, 2025, as part of the national 2025/2026 internship cohort.
The interns from other regions have begun their training, while those assigned to Kiambu have been left out due to the ongoing strike.
“This measure is necessary to safeguard the interns’ training, ensure timely progression of their programme, and maintain alignment with their peers nationally,” the Ministry stated.
Kenyatta University has already withdrawn its students and doctoral lecturers from Kiambu County and signed a new MOU with KUTRH, while other universities like JKUAT and MKU are currently looking for alternate locations to teach and train their staff.
The county has been given until September 15, 2025, to address the situation.
If the county fails to honour this, all 697 interns will be called back and sent to hospitals around the nation.
