Nakuru-based lawyer Bernhard Kipkoech has called on the Kericho County Government to act swiftly and strategically following the decision by APS Bomet FC to host its SportPesa Premier League home matches at Kiprugut Chumo Stadium.
He said the move offers Kericho a rare chance to boost its economy, upgrade its sports infrastructure and showcase local talent on the national stage.
“Now that APS Bomet FC has chosen Kiprugut Chumo Stadium in Kericho as their home ground, it is crucial for the county government to put in place all necessary measures to ensure that SportPesa Premier League matches are played smoothly and without any hindrance,” said Kipkoech.
The lawyer underscored that such high-profile sporting events can transform a county’s economy.
He said local hotels, eateries, transport operators and small traders stand to benefit from the influx of fans, players and officials travelling to Kericho for the matches.
“This is not just football; it is an opportunity to spur local business growth and generate income for our people,” he said.
Kipkoech also highlighted the potential for job creation, noting that more stadium attendants, security staff, event organisers and vendors would be required to support match days.
He added that the increased visibility could attract sponsors and investors to Kericho’s sports sector.
Beyond economics, Kipkoech pointed to the positive social impact. Hosting top-tier league matches will inspire local youth and give Kericho’s budding footballers a platform to showcase their skills to scouts and coaches from across the country.
“It is also a chance for the county to strengthen community cohesion and pride through sport,” he observed.
He urged the county government to invest in upgrading Kiprugut Chumo Stadium’s playing surface, seating, lighting, security, medical facilities and transport links to meet league standards.
Such improvements, he said, would benefit the community long after the league matches end.
Kipkoech concluded by saying that with proper planning, Kericho could become a model county for sports tourism and youth talent development.
“This is our time to shine as a county. We should embrace this chance to build our economy, market our region and give hope to our young people,” he said.
