Shock and grief have engulfed Kaboson Girls Secondary School in Bomet County after a 17-year-old Form Four student reportedly died by suicide.
The body of the candidate was found dangling from the roof of a store within the school compound on Friday morning. Other students, who were going about their duties, stumbled upon the body and raised the alarm, triggering panic and wails across the school.
Learning was temporarily disrupted as teachers struggled to calm the distraught students. Police officers later arrived and moved the body to Longisa County Referral Hospital mortuary.
Confirming the incident, Kaboson Location Chief David Kitur said investigations into the matter have commenced. He noted that police recovered a note believed to have been written by the deceased.
“Police have taken up the matter and are analyzing the note. The student cited stress as one of the reasons,” said Kitur.
“Investigators will seek to establish the source of the stress she mentioned.”

By the time of going to press, the school administration had not yet issued an official statement regarding the tragedy.
Chepalungu Sub-County Police Commander Phanton Analo called for calm among students and parents, assuring them that a thorough investigation was underway to prevent similar incidents in future.
“We have brought the situation under control, and there is calm at the school. Counselling has already been provided to students by officers from the Kenya Red Cross and the County Disaster Management Unit,” said Analo.
Chief Kitur urged parents to encourage open communication with their children, saying many tragedies could be prevented if learners felt free to share their struggles.
“When our children are at home, we should encourage them to speak openly about their problems. This can help avert such incidents and safeguard their lives,” he said.
