Former Bomet Central Member of Parliament Ronald Tonui has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of the Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a political chess master who consistently put the nation’s interests above his own ambitions.
Tonui ,who is also serves as KUPPET National Vice Treasurer, said Raila would be remembered for his patriotic sacrifices and unmatched commitment to the unity and stability of Kenya.
“It is a sad day to receive the news of the passing of the Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga. He will be remembered for his love for this great country and the sacrifices he made to safeguard it,” Tonui said in his condolence message.
He noted that throughout Kenya’s political history, Raila had stepped in to save the country whenever the ruling regimes were on the verge of collapse.
"Every time the government was threatened with disintegration, Raila rose to the occasion to restore calm and stability,” Tonui remarked.
The former legislator cited the 2007 post-election crisis as one of Raila’s defining moments, recalling how the ODM leader, despite his electoral victory being widely contested, chose to make peace and save the nation from further bloodshed.
“He won the 2007 elections and the country stood with him, but he made the brave decision to visit Sagana State Lodge and meet President Mwai Kibaki in order to stop the civil war that was looming,” Tonui added.
Tonui said the former Prime Minister’s actions reflected a rare kind of patriotism that placed the country’s peace and progress above political gain.
“Raila’s courage, resilience, and spirit of forgiveness will remain unmatched in our nation’s history,” he said.
He urged Kenyans to honor Raila’s memory by upholding the values he stood for — unity, democracy, and justice.
“As we mourn his passing, we must also celebrate his legacy. Raila’s vision for a peaceful and prosperous Kenya should continue guiding our nation,” remarked.
Raila Odinga’s death has plunged the country into deep mourning, with tributes pouring in from leaders across the political divide.
