A total of 176 boda boda riders from Sotik have graduated and received their driving licenses through an initiative spearheaded by the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) and Sotik MP Francis Sigei. This program aims to enhance road safety and reduce the risks riders face by operating without proper licenses.

The initiative was inspired by MP Sigei’s visit to Rwanda, where he observed a well-organized and disciplined boda boda sector. “During my trip to Rwanda last year, I saw how disciplined and organized their riders were. I thought it was time to bring the same level of professionalism to Sotik. We began by ensuring all riders get driving licenses to protect them from constant arrests and road hazards,” Sigei explained.

To kickstart the program, NG-CDF allocated Ksh 2.5 million, enrolling and training 200 riders in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) South Rift regional office. So far, 176 riders have successfully completed the training and received their licenses.

“We are now targeting another 300 riders, and I am committed to ensuring that all 1,600 riders operating within Sotik are trained and licensed within the next two years. We will train two cohorts every year,” Sigei announced.

NTSA South Rift regional representative, Ascar David, lauded the initiative, highlighting its potential to reduce accidents involving riders. “In Bomet County, we lose an average of 80 riders annually to road accidents. This program will significantly reduce such incidents by equipping riders with the necessary skills and knowledge,” she said.

To complement the training, NTSA plans to assist boda boda operators in forming and registering SACCOs in Sotik. David emphasized that SACCOs, as required by NTSA laws, will empower riders economically while improving security.

“With SACCOs, riders will know each other and can identify those infiltrating their operations with malicious intentions, such as theft or robbery. This will enhance accountability and safety within the sector,” she added.

The program represents a significant step towards improving road safety and empowering boda boda riders in Sotik, offering a model for similar initiatives in other regions.
