Detectives investigating the assassination of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso have arrested three more suspects in a coordinated operation spanning Nairobi and Kampala, Uganda, marking a breakthrough in the high-profile murder probe.
In a statement on Sunday, August 30, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said a specialised team drawn from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), Operations Directorate and Homicide Bureau tracked down two suspects who had allegedly fled to Uganda after the killing.
According to DCI, the two, Police Constable Bett Kiplangat Collins, attached to Thogoto Police Station, and civilian Pius Muiru Mbugua, were arrested at Kyanja Heights flats in Kampala’s Nakawa suburb with the assistance of the Uganda Police Force.

They are currently being held at Jinja Road Police Station pending their escorted return to Nairobi.
According to investigators, forensic analysis helped detectives piece together the movements and roles of the suspects in the operation that led to Dr Mutiso’s killing on the morning of July 29, 2026, in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The DCI said investigations had established that PC Bett allegedly conducted surveillance and served as co-driver to Daniel Mwangi Njoroge, described as a central organiser of the operation.
Njoroge was allegedly driving a Land Cruiser Prado, which detectives say was used to box in the Uber vehicle in which Dr Mutiso was travelling moments before she was fatally shot.
Detectives further alleged that Mbugua played a crucial role as a link between the alleged execution team and the person who contracted them.

“Investigations have established that Pius Muiru Mbugua was a key link between the execution team and the person who contracted them. Mbugua served as paymaster, moving money for logistics and the movement of the hit team,” the DCI said.
The latest arrests bring fresh momentum to investigations into the murder, which has attracted widespread public attention and speculation over the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The DCI thanked the Uganda Police Force for its cooperation in facilitating the arrests and secure detention of the two suspects, saying the cross-border operation demonstrated continued efforts to track down everyone linked to the alleged assassination.
The agency also pushed back against claims by some political actors that suspects in the case had been arrested and secretly released or assisted to flee the country.
DCI fires back at Gachagua
The DCI dismissed the allegations as false and accused unnamed political actors of spreading “reckless, inflammatory and unsubstantiated claims” aimed at undermining public confidence in the investigation.
“Yesterday’s arrests, effected in Kampala are the factual answer to that noise,” the agency said, adding: “Flight delayed the file. It did not close it.”
The persons of interest arrested in Uganda are expected to be escorted back to Kenya, where they will join Gathoni in undergoing further processing before being arraigned in court.
