Eight people have been injured after a building collapsed in Maomboleo, Kisumu County, prompting a multi-agency emergency response.
The Kenya Red Cross in an update on Monday, September 21, 2026, said six of the injured were treated at the scene, while two others who were in critical condition were evacuated to hospital for further treatment.
“Alongside a multi-agency response team, we have attended to eight injured people. Six were treated on site, while two in critical condition were referred to hospital. All residents have been successfully evacuated,” the organisation said.
The Kenya Red Cross had earlier reported that its response teams were heading to the scene after receiving reports of the building collapse.
The cause of the collapse had not immediately been established.
Emergency response teams remained at the scene as authorities assessed the extent of the damage and continued efforts to ensure the area was safe.
Further details on the condition of the two critically injured victims were not immediately available.
Kisumu latest incident
The Kisumu building collapse comes less than two weeks after a similar incident in Kisii County, where emergency teams mounted a multi-agency search and rescue operation.
On September 8, 2026, a five-storey building under construction collapsed in Ugembo, Kisii County, raising fears that workers or other people could have been trapped beneath the rubble.
The Kenya Red Cross joined county emergency response teams, police and fire and rescue personnel at the scene as crews searched the debris for possible survivors.
“County ambulance services and EMS Kenya are also on scene providing emergency medical support,” the organisation said in an update following the incident.
At the time, authorities had not established how many people were inside the building when it collapsed, prompting rescuers to conduct a search of the site.
