Families and residents along the Kapsabet-Chavakali road were left in mourning after a student and a boda boda rider lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Friday morning.

The rider was transporting four students believed to be from Kaptik Secondary School when a speeding van allegedly crashed into the motorcycle.

One of the students and the rider died instantly, while three other students sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital.

The crash triggered anger among local residents, who set the van ablaze in protest over what they described as reckless driving.

“It is painful to lose young lives in such circumstances. These students were simply going to school when the accident happened,” said a resident.

Community leaders called for urgent interventions to prevent further loss of life along the accident-prone road.

“We cannot continue losing our children on this road. Authorities need to act before more families are thrown into mourning,” said a local leader.

As schools prepare for the midterm break, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has appealed for heightened vigilance among all road users.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. We urge drivers to observe speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking and prioritize the safety of learners travelling to and from school,” the authority said.

The injured students remained under medical care as police investigated the cause of the accident.
