A new chapter is beginning for Kapkatet Stadium in Kericho as the historic facility undergoes a major facelift after years of neglect and stalled development.
The rehabilitation project, which recently commenced under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence, is expected to transform the facility into a modern 10,000-seater stadium equipped to host sporting competitions, community events and other major gatherings.
For years, Kapkatet Stadium has remained an important landmark for the people of Kericho, carrying both historical and cultural significance despite its deteriorating state.
The ongoing works are now expected to breathe new life into the facility and position it as a key sporting hub in the region.

The upgraded stadium will feature a standard football pitch, tartan athletics track and permanent spectator seating, providing athletes and sports enthusiasts with improved facilities.
The project will also include modern floodlights, a Teflon canopy, VIP lounges and digital and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities, marking a major departure from the stadium’s previous state.
The Government says the investment is intended to create opportunities for young people by providing an appropriate environment for identifying, nurturing and developing sporting talent.
“The upgraded facility will create a platform for talent identification and development while supporting community events, recreation and youth engagement.”
The development is particularly significant for young athletes in Kericho who have often had limited access to modern sporting infrastructure.
With a standard athletics track and football pitch, the facility is expected to provide emerging athletes with a better environment to train and compete while creating opportunities for talent scouts to identify promising sportsmen and women.
The stadium is also expected to serve a wider community purpose beyond sporting activities.
According to the Government, the upgraded facility will provide residents with a space for community gatherings, recreation and youth programmes, strengthening interaction and social engagement within the area.
