Kenya reasserted its absolute supremacy in global distance running on Monday evening at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, delivering a brilliant 1-2-3 podium sweep in the men’s 3,000-metre steeplechase.
Rising star Edmund Serem clinched the gold medal in 8:18.23, edging out Monaco Diamond League champion Simon Koech (8:18.59) in a thrilling home-stretch sprint.
Leonard Bett crossed the line shortly after in 8:21.63 to complete the clean sweep, sending jubilation through the Kenyan camp and fans worldwide.

A Masterclass Over the Barriers
The trio controlled the pace from the gun, maintaining a tactical barrier-clearing cadence that ground down the international field.
By the final bell, all three Kenyans had broken away from the pack.
Over the final water jump, Serem surged forward, holding off a fierce challenge from Koech in the final 50 metres to claim his maiden Commonwealth title.
“We ran as a team and executed our plan perfectly,” a beaming Serem said post-race. “To stand on the podium with my brothers and see three Kenyan flags raised together is the greatest feeling.”
A Legacy Preserved
The performance marks Kenya’s seventh clean sweep in the men’s steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games (following 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018) and their tenth consecutive gold medal in the event.
