Coventry City delivered an impressive performance to beat Newcastle United 4-1 at the CBS Arena, earning manager Frank Lampard a major boost as his team climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The victory also marked Coventry’s first home win of the season and extended their winning streak to two consecutive league matches.

Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni scored for the hosts, while Sven Botman netted Newcastle’s only goal in a match that exposed the visitors’ defensive weaknesses.

Newcastle, meanwhile, suffered their second consecutive away defeat by the same 4-1 scoreline, increasing pressure on manager Jaissle to address his side’s struggles.

Rudoni penalty gives Coventry early advantage

Coventry took the lead in the sixth minute after goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek fouled summer signing Cherif inside the penalty area.

Rudoni stepped up to convert the spot-kick, giving the home side an early advantage.

Newcastle created several opportunities to draw level but struggled to convert their chances. Matias Fernandez-Pardo was among those who failed to capitalise, missing two promising opportunities, including one effort cleared off the line by Bobby Thomas after he had beaten the goalkeeper.

The visitors paid for their wastefulness three minutes after the interval when 19-year-old Cherif struck from outside the box in the 48th minute to double Coventry’s lead.

Cherif nearly added another seven minutes later but missed from close range following a defensive mistake by Malick Thiaw.

Newcastle fight back before Coventry seal victory

Newcastle briefly revived their hopes in the 70th minute when Botman unleashed a stunning long-range effort to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

However, Coventry quickly re-established control through substitute Simms, who scored with his first touch in the 81st minute. His effort took a deflection before finding the back of the net.

Mfuni completed the scoring five minutes later, marking his first senior goal and becoming Coventry’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer.

The 18-year-old joined the club on loan from Manchester City during the summer, and his late strike capped a memorable afternoon for the hosts.

The result was particularly significant for Coventry, who had waited 25 years for a home victory in the Premier League and had struggled to find the net on their own ground this season.

Lampard hails Coventry’s performance

Lampard praised his players for their commitment and determination, while cautioning against becoming complacent after the emphatic result.

“We played like the team we want to be here. There’s so much spirit and energy. We know we’re going to have to suffer at times in games; we have to understand what the level is,” he said.

The Coventry manager also credited his team’s work ethic and confidence for helping them secure the three points.

“But the work ethic from the team, the belief, then you get what you deserve, which is great finishes. We haven’t had that rub of the green, which might have helped us nick a few more points,” Lampard added.

Despite his satisfaction, the former Chelsea manager stressed that his side must maintain the same standards in the matches ahead.

“As a complete performance, we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground because it’s only one game and we need 30 more of those. But it’s a great feeling for the players,” he said.

Newcastle boss apologises to travelling supporters

Jaissle admitted that Newcastle had fallen short of expectations and apologised to supporters who made the trip to Coventry.

“We’re frustrated. It’s a feeling you don’t want to have on a Monday evening after a match where you should win,” he said.

“We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result.”

The Newcastle manager acknowledged that his team had created opportunities but failed to demonstrate the necessary efficiency in front of goal.

“There were bits that were good, but in both boxes, to defend our own goal, we need to improve and also score goals. The opportunities were there, but the desire and hunger to finish the attacks was missing,” Jaissle said.

He added that the team needed to focus on areas within its control as it seeks to recover from consecutive heavy away defeats.

What’s next for Coventry and Newcastle?

Coventry will aim to make it three consecutive league victories when they travel to face Tottenham next Monday.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will return home to host Aston Villa on Saturday as they look to bounce back from another disappointing away performance.
