Bomet University Secretary General Francis Obala is seeking to translate his experience in student leadership into national politics, setting his sights on the Matayos Constituency parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.

Obala, a fourth-year student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Public Relations at Bomet University, has emerged as a prominent voice among the institution’s student fraternity, where he represents students’ interests and advocates for issues affecting their welfare.

Born in Matayos Constituency, Busia County, Obala is the second-last child in a family of 12 children in the Otondo family. His background and experience in student leadership have shaped his ambition to pursue a bigger role in public service.

His journey to the university’s top student leadership office was not without challenges. In his second year, Obala contested for the position of Secretary General but lost the election.

Rather than abandon his ambitions, he returned to the race in his third year, determined to secure the position. His second attempt proved successful, earning him the mandate to serve as the university’s Secretary General.

The experience highlighted the importance of persistence, resilience and learning from setbacks—qualities he hopes to carry into his political ambitions.

From student leadership to national politics

With the 2027 General Election approaching, Obala is now looking beyond campus politics and preparing to test his popularity in Matayos Constituency, where he hopes to contest for the Member of Parliament seat.

His anticipated entry into the race marks a transition from representing university students to seeking an electoral mandate from the wider electorate.

Obala says leadership should be measured by the ideas candidates present, their commitment to development, their accountability to the people and their willingness to serve, rather than the amount of money they distribute during campaigns.

His position places emphasis on issue-based politics, with voters expected to assess candidates on their plans for the constituency and their ability to respond to residents’ needs.

For a young aspirant seeking to move from student leadership into competitive electoral politics, the challenge will be to turn his campus experience into a constituency-wide support base.

Plans to engage Matayos residents

Obala plans to visit Matayos Constituency before the end of 2026 to formally introduce his political ambitions and present his manifesto to residents.

The planned visit is also expected to provide an opportunity for him to engage local elders, seek their blessings and build support ahead of the 2027 election campaign.

Engagement with community elders could form part of his efforts to establish relationships with local opinion leaders and understand the priorities of residents as he prepares for the contest.

The visit will offer an early opportunity for the aspirant to outline his vision for Matayos and explain how his leadership experience could translate into representation at the National Assembly.

However, as the race takes shape, his ability to articulate practical development priorities, connect with voters across the constituency and build an effective grassroots network will be important in determining the strength of his bid.

A new chapter in his leadership journey

Obala’s political ambitions represent the next stage of a journey that began with his decision to seek student leadership despite an initial electoral setback.

Having secured the Secretary General position on his second attempt, he now hopes to use the experience gained at the university as a foundation for pursuing elective leadership.

His proposed bid for the Matayos parliamentary seat will place him in the broader contest for the constituency’s political future, where voters will have the opportunity to evaluate aspirants based on their manifestos, track records and commitment to public service.

As he prepares to engage residents ahead of the 2027 General Election, Obala’s central challenge will be to demonstrate that the leadership experience he has gained at Bomet University can translate into a compelling vision for the people of Matayos.
