Kerundut parents give ministry 7-day ultimatum to remove Principal

Parents of Kerundut Secondary School in Chepalungu, Bomet County, have demanded the immediate transfer of the school principal over alleged mismanagement, declining academic standards and deteriorating infrastructure.

The parents have given the Ministry of Education a seven-day ultimatum to act, threatening to stage protests and disrupt operations when the school reopens later this month.

Speaking to the press, the parents also called for the dissolution of the school’s Board of Management, accusing it of failing to address their concerns despite repeated complaints.

Parent Raeli Korgoren said poor leadership and alleged laxity among teachers had contributed to a decline in the school’s academic performance, raising fears that students could record poor results.

“We are afraid our children are just in school and will return home with poor results because of the laxity displayed by teachers,” Korgoren said.

“Ministry officials must move with speed and crack the whip on a head teacher who has failed to show leadership,” she said.

The parents also raised concerns over alleged financial mismanagement and the state of facilities at the school.

Korgoren claimed some students were forced to share chairs while sanitation facilities were overcrowded, despite parents meeting their financial obligations.

She further alleged that casual workers had gone unpaid and criticised the administration for failing to hold regular meetings with parents to discuss the affairs of the institution.

David Sang, a former member of the school’s Board of Management, called on the County Director of Education to intervene urgently, warning that parents could take drastic action if their demands were ignored.

“This should reach the County Director: we want the principal out with immediate effect,” Sang said.

“If the ministry fails to act, we will close down the school until he is transferred,” he added.

However, the school administration has dismissed the allegations, maintaining that Kerundut Secondary School has continued to make academic progress.

Deputy Principal Thomas Yegon said the institution’s academic performance had improved steadily over the past five years, contradicting the parents’ claims of declining standards.

“Academically speaking, our school is on a positive trajectory, and parents should appreciate this,” Yegon said.

Yegon also denied claims that students lacked adequate desks, saying the school had sufficient furniture for all learners.

He invited parents to inspect the facilities when the school reopens, urging them to work with the administration instead of making allegations that could damage the institution’s reputation.

The standoff comes as parents and the school administration await intervention from education officials, with the seven-day ultimatum threatening to escalate tensions ahead of the reopening of the school.
