Ruto Assures Dangote Against Extortion in Kenya

President William Ruto has warned individuals he accused of attempting to “extort” billionaire Aliko Dangote over his planned investment in Lamu, saying the government will not allow brokers to interfere with the project.

Ruto said investors should be treated as development partners rather than subjected to conditions that could discourage them from putting their money into Kenya.

He cited Dangote’s experience in Ethiopia, where the government committed to buying all the fertiliser produced by his plant for 10 years, saying such incentives helped attract the investment.

“Huku kwetu, tunasema tumpatie investor masharti. Nyinyi mnanielewa? Tafadhali bwana, nawaomba, eh, tuache hiyo mchezo,” Ruto said.

The President was speaking about Dangote’s proposed investment in Lamu, which he said would have benefits beyond the billionaire’s business interests.

“What Aliko is doing for Kenya by investing in this Lamu is more than an investment for money. It is the development of our region,” he said.

Ruto further assured Dangote that his government would protect the investment from individuals seeking personal benefits.

“I want to assure you, my good brother Aliko, I know you have had a different experience before in Kenya. I want to assure you, nobody is going to extort from you anything,” Ruto said.

He alleged that some individuals who have been publicly opposing the project and sponsoring court cases were seeking opportunities to negotiate personal benefits behind the scenes.

“Some of the people you see issuing statements left, right, and center, and sponsoring court cases, they are actually extortionists,” Ruto alleged.

The President said his administration would not engage individuals he described as brokers seeking to benefit from the investment.

“I want to tell those who are expecting, those brokers, there will be nobody to talk to you,” he said.

Ruto also referred to Dangote’s earlier remarks that he was prepared to confront those opposed to his investment plans.

“You have heard this cold war, you have heard this gentleman tell you he is ready. Dangote himself has said, for those who want a fight with him, he will give them big trouble. So, mujipange,” Ruto said.

The remarks come amid debate over Dangote’s proposed investment in Lamu and concerns raised by some residents and stakeholders over the project, including demands for clarity on compensation and the benefits expected to accrue to the local community.
