ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga has temporarily stepped back from the party’s day-to-day leadership duties as he travels to the United Kingdom (UK) for a routine medical checkup.
Oburu said the decision was made following advice from his doctors and the ODM leadership, describing the move as a deliberate step to allow him to undergo a comprehensive health assessment and take time to rest.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 10, Oburu said his absence would also provide an opportunity to test ODM’s institutional strength and ability to operate without relying on one individual.

“This is a time of transition, where the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is being tested on its readiness and preparedness on institutionalism. I welcome this test,” he said.
The ODM leader said he had confidence in the party’s existing structures to ensure that its operations continue without interruption during his absence.
He specifically pointed to Deputy Party Leaders Paul Simba Arati, the Kisii Governor, and Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, the Mombasa Governor, as well as the National Central Committee and the party secretariat.
“As an elder who has walked this long journey with you, I have absolute faith in their collective leadership, discipline, and vision to steer our movement effectively,” Oburu said.
He urged ODM members, officials and supporters to remain united and cooperate with the party officials tasked with overseeing its affairs while he is away.

Oburu said the medical trip was part of routine health checks associated with advancing age and was also intended to give him a dedicated period for rest and rejuvenation.
“I urge all party members, officials, and the millions of Kenyans who look to us for leadership to accord them the utmost cooperation, stay unified, and remain focused on our shared national goals,” he said.
Oburu also thanked ODM supporters and Kenyans for their prayers, goodwill and continued support as he undergoes the medical assessment in the UK.
