Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of taking credit for projects initiated by the Bomet County Government during his development tour of the region.
In a statement on his X account on Thursday, September 10, 2026, Gachagua claimed Ruto’s visit to Bomet exposed the lack of new national government projects that the President could launch, commission or inspect during his tour.
According to Gachagua, Ruto instead visited the Bomet County Assembly and the Mother and Child Hospital, which he said were projects undertaken by the county government.
“Mr William Ruto visited Bomet County yesterday to quell the public dissatisfaction that his lying and brutal regime had nothing for the residents and that he obtained their votes by false pretenses. The National Government has done nothing for the people of Bomet County; just false promises,” Gachagua said.

He questioned the significance of Ruto’s visit to the county projects, arguing that the President should have showcased new developments delivered by the national government if his administration had fulfilled its promises to residents.
Gachagua also took issue with Ruto shedding tears after meeting a young girl who spoke about the difficulties facing her mother.
“But who has deliberately caused these troubles and pain? Who has caused the tears on the young girl? Isn’t it Mr. William Ruto? So why was he crying pretentiously?” he posed.
Concern on economic charter
The former deputy president further claimed that economic charters signed between the national government and counties, including Bomet and Kericho, had failed to translate into tangible development.
He alleged that the agreements were “gathering dust” at the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) headquarters and could not be implemented within the remaining period of Ruto’s presidency.
Gachagua also accused the government of using handouts to mobilise residents to attend Ruto’s public meetings during the South Rift tour.
He contrasted the alleged payouts with the recent Ol Kalou by-election, claiming that residents of Bomet and Kericho had been “shortchanged” in comparison.

Ruto’s tour of Bomet and Kericho comes as the President steps up his development agenda ahead of the 2027 General Election, with his administration seeking to highlight infrastructure and other government projects across the country.
Gachagua, who has emerged as one of Ruto’s most vocal critics since leaving government, challenged the President to address the economic difficulties facing Kenyans instead of relying on emotional appeals.
“Such tears will no longer move Kenyans into voting a wrong person,” Gachagua said.
He concluded with a direct message to the President: “Fix the Country Mr. William Ruto!”
