Detectives have arrested a man accused of impersonating a police officer and extorting members of the public along Jogoo Road in Nairobi.

The person of interest, identified as Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, was arrested by officers from Jogoo Road Police Station at DC Stage following a public tip-off about a suspicious individual allegedly posing as a law enforcement officer to extort unsuspecting members of the public.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the person of interest introduced himself as Sergeant Augustine Mjomba Mwadime and claimed to be attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) Training School in Embakasi.

“Recovered from him was a forged certificate of appointment bearing a fake service number, alongside a pair of handcuffs and two keys,” the DCI said.

The agency described the items as “props intended to make his impersonation more convincing.”

The suspect was subsequently taken into custody and is undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.

The DCI commended members of the public for providing information that led to the arrest, urging Kenyans to remain vigilant and report individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities.
