Bomet University welcomes first cohort of over 4,000 students after Charter Award

Bomet University has marked a major milestone after welcoming its first cohort of more than 4,000 first-year students for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The admission exercise was led by Vice Chancellor Professor Charles Mutai and Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Patrick Ojera, who joined staff and continuing students in welcoming the new students.

The cohort is the first to be admitted following the university’s award of a charter in February 2026, formally elevating the institution to a fully-fledged university.

Bomet University has rapidly expanded in recent years, recording growth in student enrolment, infrastructure and academic programmes.

The arrival of thousands of new students is expected to boost businesses and other economic activities in Bomet town and its environs, while strengthening the county’s position as an emerging education, innovation and economic hub.

Admission is currently ongoing for students joining the School of Arts and Social Sciences and the School of Business and Economics.

Students admitted to the School of Education and School of Pure and Applied Sciences had reported earlier.

The university has scheduled orientation for first-year students to begin on August 20, 2026, marking the start of a new chapter in their academic journey.

The growing student population is expected to further enhance Bomet University’s contribution to education, innovation and socio-economic development in the region.

Bomet University’s admission of its first cohort as a fully-fledged university comes months after the institution received its long-awaited university charter.

President William Ruto formally conferred the charter on Bomet University at State House, Nairobi, on February 4, 2026, elevating it to Kenya’s 36th fully chartered public university.

The charter marked the institution’s transition from a constituent college of Moi University to an autonomous university with full authority over its governance, academic programmes and research.

The Commission for University Education said the milestone affirmed the institution’s accreditation and strengthened its capacity to expand academic programmes, research and partnerships
