Nyandarua Senator John Methu has taken a swipe at President William Ruto over his recent assertion that he has not yet begun campaigning for the 2027 General Election, claiming the Head of State is already in campaign mode despite insisting otherwise.
In a statement on Monday, July 27, 2026, Methu sarcastically dismissed Ruto’s remarks as “stories of the giants,” suggesting the President’s frequent public engagements and political rallies contradict his claim.
“Sijaanza siasa and other stories of the giants,” Methu said.
The senator further mocked Ruto’s style of addressing supporters while standing atop his official vehicle during recent tours, alleging that crowds attending the events had been ferried using school buses.

“Akiwa juu ya gari. Akiwa ameleta watu Sunday na basi za shule. Akianza siasa atashuka juu ya gari apande wheelbarrow. Miti imeteleza,” Methu said, in an apparent reference to the wheelbarrow symbol associated with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Methu also painted a picture of what he described as a coordinated opposition campaign, arguing that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had already consolidated support in the Mt Kenya region while Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was making political inroads in Western Kenya.
He went on to speculate that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka would rally support in Ukambani, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i would galvanise the Kisii vote, and Democratic Action Party-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa would mobilise the Coast region.
“Unaona venye Riggy G amekamata mlima, Sifuna akatetemesha Western. Sasa imagine next Sunday Kalonzo arushe makombora akiwa Ukambani, na Matiang’i akaze Kisii. Jicho Pevu agurumishe Pwani. There will be no escape route for Baba Sharleen,” Methu said.
President Ruto on 2027 campaign
Methu’s remarks follow President Ruto’s declaration during his Sunday July 26 remarks in Busia County that he had not started campaigning for the 2027 General Election.
The President maintained that his current nationwide tours are aimed at inspecting and launching government development projects rather than seeking votes.
Ruto has repeatedly defended the tours, saying his administration remains focused on delivering its Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and fulfilling campaign promises before the next election.

However, opposition leaders have accused the President of using State resources and development tours to advance his re-election bid.
The criticism has intensified in recent weeks as political activity across the country gathers momentum, with leaders allied to both the Kenya Kwanza administration and the opposition holding rallies and making strategic regional visits ahead of the 2027 race.
Methu, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has been among the administration’s fiercest critics following Gachagua’s fallout with President Ruto.
Gachagua has since embarked on a series of political engagements across the country alongside opposition leaders, signalling efforts to forge a united front to challenge Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
