The government has unveiled a new policing structure that will see the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit (NMP) headquartered at Kamukunji Police Station, in a major reorganisation aimed at strengthening security coordination across the capital.
According to the newly released structure, the unit will operate under the Kenya Police Service and is expected to improve operational efficiency through faster deployment of officers, better coordination among security agencies, and a more focused response to emerging security threats in Nairobi.
“The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit has been established to strengthen security in the capital and ensure that policing services are brought closer to the people,” the statement said.
The structure places the unit under a command led by a Commandant and Deputy Commandant, supported by an Integrated Command Centre and a Multi-Agency Liaison Office designed to enhance coordination between different security agencies.

Officials said the new arrangement is intended to improve response times and streamline command and control of operations across the city.
“The new command will enable better coordination of operations, faster deployment of officers, and a more focused approach to tackling security challenges across Nairobi,” the statement added.
Inside the reorganisation roles
Under the reorganisation, Sub-Region Commanders and Sub-County Commanders will oversee policing operations across Nairobi, while the Kamukunji headquarters will coordinate activities of police stations, police posts, and patrol bases within the metropolitan command.
Specialised units have also been established to address specific security concerns.

They include the Traffic Unit, Investigations Bureau, Security and Patrol Unit, Public Safety Unit, Enforcement Unit, and Diplomatic Unit.
Security officials say the integrated structure is expected to improve information sharing, operational planning, and rapid response to incidents in different parts of the city.
“The command is designed to strengthen coordination, enhance public safety, and improve service delivery to residents of Nairobi,” an official familiar with the new structure said.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is expected to play a central role in tackling urban crime, traffic-related security challenges, public safety incidents, and the protection of diplomatic missions within the capital.
