Several people are feared dead while scores others sustained injuries after chaos erupted during Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s empowerment meeting in Nembure, Embu County on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Police were forced to fire tear gas to disperse rowdy youths who disrupted the meeting, with witnesses reporting that at least four vehicles were set ablaze during the confrontation.
Among the vehicles burnt was one belonging to a journalist covering the Deputy President’s event.
The violence left the area tense as police moved to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.
Residents who had turned up for the meeting but could not access the venue were reportedly held in a nearby area under police guard as the security situation deteriorated.
The cause of the confrontation was not immediately clear, although the incident disrupted the empowerment meeting and raised fresh concerns over political gatherings in the region.
The number of casualties and the extent of damage caused by the violence were yet to be officially confirmed at the time of publication.
