Fifty-nine students were injured on Thursday morning after a school bus veered off the Eldama Ravine-Nakuru highway near Kibasiso, close to Taidys Hotel.

The bus was transporting learners to a regional music festival in Mogotio when the accident occured.

The accident occurred at about 9:20 a.m. and involved a bus belonging to Pineview Academy Kiplogon.

Eldama Ravine Sub-County Police Commander Benard Indeke said preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle suffered brake failure before the driver lost control.

“Initial findings point to brake failure as the probable cause of the accident. We have launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” said Indeke.

The bus was carrying 30 students from Pineview Academy and 29 from Benonin Primary School who were travelling to participate in regional music festivals.

The learners were rushed to Eldama Ravine Sub-County Referral Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Ravine Specialist Hospital and Eldama Ravine Nursing Home.

Police said the wreckage would be towed to Eldama Ravine Police Station for inspection once a breakdown vehicle arrives.

The incident has renewed calls for school managements and transport operators to strengthen vehicle maintenance and prioritize learner safety.

“School-going children must be transported in roadworthy vehicles at all times. Safety should never be compromised,” said a local education stakeholder at the scene.
