The Ministry of Education has moved to dispel reports circulating on social media claiming that the reopening of schools for the third term has been postponed.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba said the 2026 academic calendar for basic education institutions and Teacher Training Colleges remains unchanged, with learners expected to report back to school on Monday, August 24.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Ogamba said the ministry had noted “misleading information” circulating on various social media platforms purporting that the academic calendar had been altered.
“We wish to clarify that the academic calendar for basic education institutions and Teacher Training Colleges remains unchanged,” Ogamba said.
According to the approved calendar, basic education institutions will run the third term from August 24 to October 23, 2026, while Teacher Training Colleges will open on August 24 and continue with the term until November 6, 2026.

The clarification comes just days before millions of learners are expected to return to classrooms following the August holiday.
The ministry also confirmed that national assessments and examinations will proceed according to the existing timetable issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
Ogamba urged parents, teachers and learners to ignore unofficial information and instead rely on the ministry’s official communication channels for updates.
“Parents, teachers, learners and members of the general public are advised to strictly rely on the Ministry’s official communication channels and field officers for accurate information,” he said.
The ministry’s clarification effectively puts to rest speculation that schools would reopen in September, with reports circulating online claiming that senior and secondary schools had been given a later reporting date.

The government has therefore maintained that schools should proceed with preparations for the final term and report on August 24 as scheduled.
