President William Ruto has signalled plans to transform Kericho town into a city as his administration steps up investments in housing, sports and infrastructure across the county.
Ruto said the government is investing Ksh5.6 billion in the first phase of an affordable housing programme that will deliver 2,200 units, with the overall project expected to provide 5,000 housing units.
The President said the housing development would form part of broader plans to modernise Kericho town and position it for expanded economic activity.
He also announced plans to establish a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the area, which he said would help attract investors, create jobs and open up opportunities in the digital economy.
“To transform Kericho town into a city, Sh5.6 billion is being invested in the first 2,200 affordable housing units of a total of 5,000,” Ruto said.

The President spoke on Thursday, September 10, during his development tour of Kericho and Bomet counties, where he inspected and launched several government projects.
Sh1.1 billion Kapkatet Stadium
In Bureti Constituency, Ruto launched the construction of the Sh1.1 billion Kapkatet Stadium, a major sports infrastructure project expected to serve residents across the South Rift.
The facility will have a capacity of 10,000 spectators and will feature a six-lane athletics track, a standard football pitch and other sporting facilities.
Construction is expected to be completed early next year.
Ruto said the government has also set aside Sh1 billion for sports infrastructure in Kericho town, as part of efforts to expand sporting facilities and nurture talent in the region.
Kapkatet market handed over
The President also handed over the newly completed Kapkatet Modern Market to traders, marking another milestone in the government’s efforts to improve trading facilities in the county.

The market has space for more than 200 traders and forms part of a wider programme to construct 12 modern markets across Kericho County.
The facility is equipped with electricity and water connections, sanitation facilities, storage areas, cold rooms and internet connectivity.
The projects are part of Ruto’s wider development agenda in the South Rift, with the government seeking to combine housing, infrastructure, sports and investment projects to stimulate economic activity in the region.
