Police have arrested 19 persons of interest and seized 770 litres of suspected illicit alcohol in an operation targeting illegal brewing in Misuuni Village, Mumbuni Location, Machakos County.

According to a National Police Service (NPS) statement issued on October 16, 2026, the operation was conducted by officers from Machakos Police Station on August 15, 2026, following intelligence.

The officers recovered 60 litres of chang’aa and 710 litres of kang’ara, alongside 25 kilogrammes of ammonium chloride, 10 kilogrammes of sugar and assorted brewing equipment.

The 19 individuals were taken to Machakos Police Station, while the recovered alcohol and equipment were retained as exhibits, the police said.

Brewing materials recovered

The recovery of alcohol and brewing materials formed part of an operation aimed at curbing the production and distribution of illicit brews in Machakos County.

However, the NPS statement did not specify the alleged role of each person arrested, the intended destination of the alcohol or whether investigators had identified other people linked to the operation.

The individuals’ identification as persons of interest does not, by itself, establish criminal responsibility.

Police urge public to report illegal activity

The NPS urged members of the public to report suspected illegal activities to the nearest police station or through its toll-free emergency channels.

The operation highlights the importance of investigating not only the production of suspected illicit alcohol but also the networks involved in its distribution.

What happens after the seizure?

The seizure removes 770 litres of suspected illicit brews from circulation, but the broader impact will depend on the outcome of the investigation.

Establishing where the alcohol was produced, how it was intended to reach consumers and whether other people were involved could help authorities determine the scale of the suspected operation.

The police statement did not provide an update on the individuals’ current legal status or indicate whether further arrests were expected.

For residents, the effectiveness of the crackdown will ultimately depend on whether investigations lead to sustained disruption of illegal brewing and distribution, alongside continued enforcement against unsafe alcohol.
