Chepalungu MP Victor Koech has warned residents against a fraudster allegedly masquerading as an official to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public through fake job offers and a fictitious CDF meeting.
In a statement on his Facebook page, in July 24, 2026, Koech said an individual identifying himself as “Mutai” and using the Airtel mobile number 0104977*** has been contacting residents, schools and parents with false promises of jobs.
The person of interest is also accused of spreading false information about a meeting for needy residents at the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) offices and demanding money as a “registration fee.”
“We wish to alert the general public that someone calling himself Mutai and using an Airtel mobile number, 0104977***, has been attempting to extort unsuspecting members of Chepalungu,” Koech said.
The legislator described the scheme as an act of online crime and urged residents not to fall for the deception.

“This is pure online crime and extortion. We urge everyone to remain vigilant and refuse to send any money or share personal details with such individuals,” he said.

MP Koech revealed that the mobile number has already been reported to the relevant authorities for investigation and possible action.
He further cautioned residents to rely only on official communication channels for information regarding constituency activities.
“Please note: Any official meeting or announcement will ONLY be communicated through this verified page,” he said.
The MP also urged residents to circulate the warning widely to help protect others from falling victim to the scam.

“Kindly share this message widely to protect our people,” Koech appealed.
The warning comes amid increasing cases of fraudsters targeting job seekers and vulnerable members of the public by posing as government officials and demanding registration fees for non-existent employment opportunities or assistance programmes.
