How to apply for a HELB subsequent loan

Students continuing their studies have been urged to apply for their 2026/2027 Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) subsequent loans, with the application process now available through the USSD platform.

In a notice on Monday , August 17, 2026, HELB said the subsequent loan application is still ongoing and can be completed using a Safaricom line by dialling *642#.

The process is designed for students who have previously received HELB funding and are continuing with their studies.

Applicants are required to dial *642# on their Safaricom line and select the registration option.

They will then be required to enter their National ID serial number and National ID number before creating a four-digit PIN for accessing HELB services.

After registration, applicants should select Home, then Login, followed by Subsequent Application.

Students must select the appropriate loan product depending on their level of study.

The options listed by HELB include Degree – Undergraduate Students and Diploma – TVET Students.

Applicants are then required to confirm their institution details before accepting the terms and conditions and selecting Request Loan.

Students can choose how to receive upkeep fundsOne of the key steps in the application process is selecting how the student wants their upkeep payment made.

HELB provides two options:- Mobile Money and Bank Account

After making the selection, the applicant enters their four-digit PIN to complete the application and waits for a confirmation message.

What students should know

The subsequent loan is different from a first-time loan application.

It is intended for continuing students who have previously accessed HELB funding and require further financial support for their studies.

Students should therefore ensure that their institution details and personal information are correctly captured before submitting the request.

The continued application window provides students with an opportunity to secure financial support for tuition and upkeep as they proceed with their studies.

HELB has encouraged eligible students to complete the application through the official USSD process rather than relying on third parties to submit applications on their behalf.

The application instructions shared by HELB indicate that the entire process can be completed using a Safaricom line, without the need to visit a HELB office.

Important: Students should only use official HELB channels when applying and should keep their four-digit PIN confidential.
