Ol Kalou’s Douglas Kamau sworn in after by-election victory

Ol Kalou Member of Parliament Sammy Douglas Waweru Kama has officially been sworn into the National Assembly, marking the end of a fiercely contested by-election that reshaped the political landscape in Nyandarua County.

Kamau took the Oath of Office on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Parliament Buildings, formally assuming office as the MP for Ol Kalou Constituency following his victory in the July 16, 2026 parliamentary by-election.

He signed the official Oath Register in the presence of parliamentary officials and was accompanied by Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia and Roysambu MP Augustine Kamande Mwafrika.

His election came after the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, who passed away in March 2026 after a short illness while serving his third consecutive term in Parliament.

Kiaraho’s death triggered a by-election that quickly evolved into one of Kenya’s most closely watched political contests, attracting national attention as opposition and Kenya Kwanza allies battled for control of the seat.

Running on the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) ticket, Kamau defeated the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate in a highly charged race dominated by intense campaigns, heated political exchanges, and competing narratives over the future of Nyandarua politics.

He secured 35,440 votes, earning a decisive mandate from the electorate.

The victory is widely viewed as a significant boost for the Democracy for Citizens Party, which has been working to expand its influence across the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Political analysts have described the outcome as one of the most significant opposition victories in a constituency that had attracted heavy national political interest.

Kamau will now serve the remainder of the 13th Parliament until the 2027 General Election where he is expected to seek a fresh mandate.

His swearing-in not only restores representation for the people of Ol Kalou but also signals the beginning of a new political chapter following months of uncertainty after Kiaraho’s death.

As he settles into his legislative responsibilities, attention will shift from the campaign trail to Parliament, where constituents will be watching to see how he delivers on the promises that propelled him to victory.

With the by-election now concluded and the oath administered, Ol Kalou once again has a voice in the National Assembly, bringing to a close one of the country’s most closely followed parliamentary contests this year.
