United Alternative Government is set to embark on a major political tour across Western Kenya ahead of the Memorial Commemoration of the late 8th Vice President of Kenya, Michael Christopher Simiyu Wamalwa Kijana, EGH, in what leaders describe as a defining moment in the country’s evolving political landscape.
The two-day tour, scheduled for August 21–22, 2026, will traverse Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, and Bungoma counties, culminating in a grand memorial event in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
The commemoration will feature the launch of a book celebrating the life, leadership, and enduring legacy of the late Vice President, whose role in Kenya’s democratic journey continues to inspire generations.

On a Facebook post, DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, has hinted that the coalition will embark on a two-day regional tour. The coalition has rapidly emerged as one of the country’s most formidable opposition formations.
“This year’s Memorial of the Late VP will be marked by book launch in his honour and will be preceded by a two day tour of Western Kenya by the United Alternative Government team from 21st to 22nd of August 2026 covering Busia,Kakamega,Vihiga and Bungoma Counties before winding up in Trans Nzoia on Sunday 23rdAugust 2026.” An excerpt of the Facebook post stated.
From NAK to “WANTAM”: Is Kenya Witnessing History Repeat Itself?
Reflecting on Kenya’s political evolution, Eugene Wamalwa drew striking parallels between the events that culminated in the historic 2002 General Election and the current opposition realignment.
“In 2001 my late brother Mike started a journey with two friends, one from the Mt Kenya Region called Mwai Kibaki and another one from the Eastern Region called Charity Ngilu and they formed the National Alliance of Kenya (NAK).” An excerpt of the Facebook post stated.
That alliance later merged with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)-Rainbow team, bringing together leaders including Raila Odinga, Professor George Saitoti, Kalonzo Musyoka, Moody Awori, and others to form the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), ending KANU’s 40-year rule.

Today, Wamalwa believes a similar political momentum is unfolding.
The Rise of the “WANTAM” Movement
According to Wamalwa, the seeds of the current opposition movement were planted on January 27, 2025, when former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua officially joined opposition leaders at DAP-K Headquarters, Chui House, Karen, after his impeachment.
“ On 27th of January 2025 with my brother Kalonzo Musyoka we received H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, EGH the 2nd Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya,who had been unceremoniously removed from office by impeachment, into the Opposition, DAP-K Party Headquarters, Chui House in Karen, Nairobi where We started the WANTAM journey..”
Since then, the movement has expanded into a coalition of more than ten opposition political parties, including:

As Kenya’s opposition continues to consolidate under the United Alternative Government banner, many political observers see echoes of the coalition-building that reshaped Kenyan politics in 2002.
Whether the emerging alliance can recreate the success of the NARC movement remains to be seen, but the forthcoming Western Kenya tour and the memorial of the late Vice President Michael Wamalwa Kijana are expected to serve as a major demonstration of the coalition’s growing influence.
