Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized President William Ruto, stating that the political agreement involving National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi benefited only the two leaders and their families while failing to deliver on promises made to the people of Western Kenya.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Gachagua said he had informed residents of Western Kenya during his tour of the region last month alongside leaders from the United Alternative Government coalition that the cooperation agreement between Ruto, Wetang’ula and Mudavadi had not been fully honoured.
“I explained to my cousins in detail that the only part of the agreement that had been honored is what Wetang’ula and Musalia negotiated as individuals and their families. All that had been negotiated and agreed upon for the people had been ignored for the last four years,” Gachagua said.

He further claimed that development projects allegedly promised under the agreement were not included in the latest national budget, arguing that they were unlikely to be implemented.
Gachagua also accused Members of Parliament allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration of dismissing his earlier claims by branding him a tribalist.
According to the former deputy president, a recent exposé published by The Standard had vindicated his position.
“The above exposé by The Standard confirms that I am an honest and truthful man,” he said.

He further alleged that the reported benefits highlighted in the exposé primarily favoured Wetang’ula and his extended family, adding that details relating to Mudavadi’s alleged benefits would also emerge.
Gachagua claimed the two Western Kenya leaders were now urging residents of the region to support Ruto’s re-election because they stood to continue benefiting politically.
“No wonder they are on an overdrive pleading with my cousins to re-elect Ruto so that they and their families continue to eat,” he said.
