Barchok Urges Youth to Register as IEBC Voter Drive Records Slow Start in Bomet

Bomet Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok has urged young people to take advantage of the ongoing enhanced continuous voter registration exercise.

Speaking during a development tour of Merigi Ward in Bomet East, Barchok said the exercise presents a crucial opportunity for youth to prepare ahead of the next General Election.

“2027 is around the corner, and the only tool that will matter and give you a voice is a voter’s card. Our youth should come out in large numbers, alongside everyone else who has not registered,” Barchok said.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is currently conducting a 30-day enhanced continuous voter registration exercise, targeting 200,000 new voters across the five sub-counties of Bomet Central, Konoin, Bomet East, Chepalungu and Sotik.

However, the exercise got off to a slow start, with low turnout reported on the first day—raising concern among officials and leaders.

In Bomet Central, only 117 new voters were registered, according to Assistant Registration Officer Anastacia Egelan, who expressed optimism that the numbers would improve.

“Being the first day, this is expected. I am optimistic that as time goes by, more youth will come out and the registration will gain momentum,” she said.

Egelan noted that the IEBC is working closely with local administrators and leaders to mobilize residents and encourage registration.

“We have shared out our kit schedule for every ward in Bomet Central, and we are confident we will reach potential voters,” she said, urging the media to help amplify the message.

Barchok also highlighted the challenge of many youth lacking national identification cards, which are required for voter registration.

“There are many youth and residents who do not have national IDs. This is an opportunity to acquire this important document, as the Ministry of Interior has opened a window for those without IDs,” he added.
