Bomet rolls out 21K tilapia fingerlings under climate action programme

The Bomet County Government has begun distributing tilapia fingerlings and fish feeds to fish farmers under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme.

The distribution is aimed at boosting food security, strengthening livelihoods and enhancing climate resilience.

According to a statement posted on the County Government of Bomet’s official Facebook page on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the Climate Change Unit (CCU) has commenced the receipt and distribution of the fingerlings and fish feeds under FLLoCA Cycle 2.

The county said the project is being implemented with technical support from the Department of Fisheries to strengthen local aquaculture against the effects of climate change.

Speaking while leading the distribution exercise, Water, Environment and Climate Change Chief Officer Solomon Kimetto said the intervention targets 14 ready fishponds across the county.

“The intervention targets 14 ready fishponds, providing them with 1,500 fingerlings each and a supply of 300 kilogrammes of fish feeds structured to last an entire farming season,” Kimetto said.

The distribution translates to a total of 21,000 tilapia fingerlings being supplied to the beneficiaries during the current phase of the programme.

Kimetto added that the county is also expanding fish farming infrastructure under the same climate action initiative.

“In the current Cycle, the Climate Change Unit is implementing the construction and equipping of 26 fishponds spread across the county,” he said.

The county government said the initiative is expected to improve food security, create sustainable livelihoods and strengthen community resilience to climate change.

“The initiative aims to boost food security, enhance sustainable livelihoods, and strengthen community climate adaptation,” the county said in the statement.
