More than 50 pedestrians have been arrested in an ongoing enforcement operation targeting people who fail to use the Allsops footbridge along Thika Road, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced.
According to the Authority, those arrested will be arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts and charged with failing to use the designated footbridge and obstructing the free flow of traffic.
The operation forms part of NTSA’s broader campaign to improve pedestrian safety and reduce road accidents on major highways.
In a statement on Wednesday , August 5, 2026, NTSA said crossing the road at undesignated points exposes pedestrians to serious danger and also affects other road users.
“The Authority urges pedestrians to use designated footbridges and crossings at all times, as crossing in undesignated areas not only endangers their lives but also puts other road users at risk and disrupts traffic flow,” NTSA said.
The crackdown was taking place at the busy Allsops section of Thika Road, an area that experiences heavy traffic throughout the day and where pedestrians have frequently been seen crossing the highway instead of using the overhead bridge.

The arrests come amid intensified nationwide enforcement against jaywalking and failure to use footbridges.
Authorities have repeatedly warned that many pedestrian fatalities occur when people attempt to cross high-speed roads at unauthorized locations
Road safety officials have urged members of the public to cooperate with enforcement officers and prioritize their safety by using available footbridges, zebra crossings, and other designated pedestrian facilities.
Why NTSA began the enforcement
NTSA Director of Road Safety Andrew Kiplagat while speaking to a local station on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 said pedestrians remain the most vulnerable road users.

“Crash statistics show that most of those losing their lives are pedestrians. That is why we are implementing this programme together with other government departments, including the police,” Kiplagat said.
He noted that the operation has now moved from public sensitisation to full enforcement.
“After implementing the sensitisation phase, we have now reached the enforcement stage. That is why you have seen people who do not follow the law being arrested and taken to court,” he said.
